HERO Board of Directors

Our History

English River Outfitters was formed in May, 2008 by 23-year military veteran Chuck Geertz. He was joined on the Board of Directors by his brother Cyle, who also has over 23 years of military service, and Karen Fisher, a Gold Star wife whose husband served in the military for over 17 years. Their goal was to offer a quiet, relaxing recreation area for our veterans and their families, with a particular focus on accommodating disabled veterans and serving Blue Star, Silver Star, and Gold Star families.

During its first year, English River Outfitters hosted just 6 veterans. The property was a very primitive site with no buildings, electricity, indoor plumbing or water. However, during the next years English River Outfitters has experienced tremendous growth.

The beautiful HERO lodge near Washington, Iowa was completed in 2022. The lodge sleeps 16 with 5 bedrooms, 5 full bathrooms, 2 kitchens, spacious living spaces, and is surrounded by nearly 40 acres of timber with hiking trails and a pond. When the lodge isn’t being used for veteran events, it is available to rent through VRBO. Every dollar you spend on renting this facility will go toward providing our veterans and their families with hunting and fishing excursions and community events. The grounds has numerous trails and woodlands for hunting and hiking.

English River Outfitters has served over 1,200 veterans and their families.

Testimonials

"Thanks so much for having my husband on the recent hog hunt. This hunt was a new lease on life for him. I actually saw some of the person that he used to be before all the ugly stuff. He's had a spark of excitement ever since. Even his therapist said he's seen a difference, than you doesn't seem to be enough".

"Thank you for your hospitality and attention to detail. Our weekend was much more than a deer hunt. It was a cathartic, bonding experience that I did not want to end. You gave us a weekend that provided camaraderie, HUMOR, awesome food, great hunting and the opportunity to be a part of the English River Outfitters' saga. I cannot wait to get back down there again!"

"I am a Vietnam Vet and have been diagnosed with PTSD; as a Vietnam Vet, I am moved by this project and what it's designed for. I will always be indebted to the man working to provide our veterans a place like ERO."

-Roger (IA)

"My time at English River Outfitters saved my life! One time out to English River Outfitters showed me that I have a life to live and it's worth it!! I experienced a calm environment that was so overwhelming I had to share it with others. My son and I have had a bad few years relating. One weekend out there helped us to bond back together. I would not be here today except for my time spent at English River Outfitters!!"
