Rod Courtney
HERO Board Position: Executive Director
Rod’s commitment to HERO is deeply personal. He knows that healing doesn’t always happen in the clinic — sometimes it happens around a campfire, on a quiet trail or during a shared moment between those who understand. Under Rod’s guidance, HERO offers outdoor retreats, peer support and healing opportunities for veterans and their families. His work focuses on creating a welcoming space where veterans can reconnect with themselves, each other and the natural world.
Military/Veteran Information: Rod honorably served in the United States Marine Corps from 1972–1976, achieving the rank of Sergeant. During his service, he worked in the message center (MOS 2543) at HQ and Service Battalion, Camp H.M. Smith in Aiea, Hawaii.
Occupation: Rod is the Executive Director of Community Resources United to Spread Hope (CRUSH) of Linn County. CRUSH Recovery Community Center is a peer-led, peer-run organization dedicated to supporting individuals and families impacted by substance use disorders.
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work
Interests & Hobbies: Rod enjoys hunting, fishing, and spending at their cabin in Missouri.
Why HERO’s Mission Inspires Me: “My love for the outdoors ties in perfectly with HERO’s mission of healing in nature—something I believe in wholeheartedly.”
